"Advances in LC/MS for Structural Characterization of Pharmaceuticals in Drug Discovery"

Bio:

Dr. Guodong Chen is a Senior Principal Scientist at Schering-Plough Research Institute. His current research interests include applications of advanced mass spectrometry/analytical techniques in structural identification/quantitative analysis of pharmaceuticals (metabolites, impurities, degradants etc.) and high-throughput mass spectrometry in drug discovery. He is the author and/or co-author of over 45 research publications covering the broad area of mass spectrometry and analytical chemistry, including several book chapters. He has over 50 presentations at conferences and academic institutes. He also organized/chaired technical sessions at various scientific forums. Dr. Chen was the Chairperson of the North Jersey Section of American Chemical Society Mass Spectrometry Discussion Group (2004) and in 2006, he received Early Career Award in Mass Spectrometry. He served as Analytical Chemistry Program Chair for ACS MARM conference (2005) and President of Chinese American Chemical Society-Tri State (2007). Dr. Chen received his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from Purdue University under the direction of Professor R. Graham Cooks in 1997.

Abstract:

With recent advancements in ionization methods and instrumentation, liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) has become a powerful technology for structural characterization of pharmaceuticals in drug discovery. This presentation will focus on approaches in using high resolution LC/MS, LC/MSn and H/D exchange methods for metabolite identification, structural analysis of degradation products, and trace-level process impurities in drug substances. Future prospect of LC/MS in pharmaceutical applications will also be discussed.
